About Our Program
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center offers comprehensive clinical and surgical training within one of the nation's leading academic medical centers.
Our four-year program brings together rigorous clinical education, extensive subspecialty exposure, scholarly opportunities, and a strong commitment to mentorship. With 24 residents across four postgraduate years, we provide an environment in which residents assume progressively greater responsibility while receiving the guidance and support necessary to develop into skilled, thoughtful, and independent physicians.
Clinical Training
Our residents care for a broad and complex patient population, from the surrounding Washington Heights community to patients referred for specialized care from across the region and beyond.
Training encompasses the full spectrum of obstetrics and gynecology, including high-risk obstetrics, gynecologic surgery, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, gynecologic oncology, family planning, and general obstetric and gynecologic care.
At NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, residents gain experience in a clinical environment supported by advanced maternal and neonatal services, including the Center for Prenatal Pediatrics and the Mothers Center. Working alongside multidisciplinary teams, residents participate in the management of complex pregnancies and develop the clinical judgment required to care for patients with a wide range of medical and surgical needs.
Our program also provides extensive exposure to advanced surgical techniques and emerging technologies. Through progressive clinical responsibility, direct faculty mentorship, and hands-on experience, residents build both technical proficiency and the confidence to approach increasingly complex cases.
Education and Mentorship
Education is central to our program. Residents learn from experienced generalist and subspecialty faculty who are committed not only to clinical excellence but also to teaching, professional development, and mentorship.
Our educational curriculum combines structured didactics, case-based discussions, simulation, clinical teaching, and opportunities for independent learning.
The Roy and Diana Vagelos Education Center, home to the Mary and Michael Jaharis Simulation Center, provides an additional setting for developing procedural skills, practicing clinical decision-making, and strengthening teamwork through realistic, hands-on training.
Residents are encouraged to ask questions, engage in thoughtful discussion, and develop the habits of lifelong learning that are essential to the practice of medicine.
Research and Scholarly Opportunities
As part of Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, our residents have access to a broad academic community and opportunities for meaningful scholarly work.
Residents collaborate with faculty mentors on clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, medical education projects, and other areas of academic inquiry. These experiences allow residents to explore their interests, contribute to advances in patient care, and develop skills in critical appraisal, scientific inquiry, and academic presentation.
We recognize that residents enter training with different professional goals and encourage each individual to pursue opportunities that align with their interests and aspirations.
Our Patients and Community
Our location in Washington Heights is an important part of who we are.
The neighborhood's rich cultural and linguistic traditions, together with New York City's broad patient population, create a clinical environment that is both challenging and deeply rewarding. Residents care for individuals and families across a wide range of backgrounds, medical circumstances, and stages of life.
This experience strengthens not only clinical knowledge and decision-making, but also the ability to listen carefully, communicate effectively, and build trusting relationships with patients.
We take pride in serving our community and in preparing physicians who approach patient care with skill, compassion, curiosity, and respect.
Preparing for What Comes Next
Our goal is to prepare residents for the full range of opportunities available within obstetrics and gynecology.
Whether graduates choose general practice, subspecialty fellowship training, academic medicine, research, or medical education, we strive to provide the clinical foundation, mentorship, and professional development necessary for them to pursue their goals with confidence.
Above all, we want our graduates to leave Columbia not only as accomplished clinicians and surgeons, but as thoughtful colleagues, effective advocates for their patients, and physicians committed to advancing the field of obstetrics and gynecology.
